Online marketplaces must implement trader verification systems to ensure that businesses selling on their platforms can be traced.

Trader Information Requirements

Marketplaces must collect and verify:

  • Trader's name, address, telephone number, and email
  • Copy of identification document or business registration
  • Payment account details
  • Self-certification that products comply with EU law

Verification Obligations

Platforms must make best efforts to verify trader information using:

  • Official online databases (business registers, VAT databases)
  • Trustworthy documents from traders
  • Any other reliable sources accessible remotely

Traceability

Information must be stored for 6 months after the contractual relationship ends and be accessible to authorities and those with legitimate interests.

Compliance by Design

Marketplace interfaces must be designed to enable traders to comply with EU consumer and product safety laws, including displaying mandatory information.

Consequences for Non-Compliance

Traders who fail to provide required information cannot offer products or services on the platform.
